Q: WILL THE FILLING OF MY DUFFY SEAT SETTLE AFTER USE? A: Yes. We slightly overfill the seats when we make them, in anticipation of the filling compressing during use. You'll find your Duffy Sail Comfort Seat will become a little more comfortable as it breaks in. The pellets will eventually compress to the point where you'll find it necessary to replenish them. Pellets are available at discount stores like Meijer. Just unzip the bottom of the seat and scoop in additional pellets until the seat's the way you like it.
Q: WILL IT SLIP? A: We're often asked this at boat shows. The answer is, yes it will slip, but no more than the seat of your pants. The seat isn't intended to stick to your boat. In actual use, you place the seat anywhere you would normally sit, and the seat doesn't slip any more than YOU normally do. We originally considered a non-slip bottom, but we found in testing that it added nothing to the function of the seat. The Dupont Cordura we use on the bottom was chosen for durability and appearance.
Q: WHERE WILL WE STORE OUR SEATS? A: We weren't ready for this frequent question when we attended our first boat show and didn't know how to respond at first. Then we realized that WE DON'T STORE THEM. They're basically, always in use. When we leave our boat, we just leave them in one of the berths. As soon as we get to our boat, the seats go to the cockpit and deck as needed. When we're very active in the cockpit, we tend to throw them below. As soon as we're settled on a course, they go back in the cockpit...or the bow pulpit, etc.
When we stay overnight, the seats are left in the cockpit or tossed into the dinette.
Also, on our boat, there were seven custom fitted vinyl cockpit seats. We stored those in our aft cabin, where they took up a great deal of room. Now, they're stored in our garage...they were a nuisance to install each time we used them, and provided minimal comfort.
Q: HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED ADDING A POCKET TO THE DUFFY SEAT? A: We included a pocket on a prototype, but because the seats are intended to be tossed about and used everywhere on the boat, the book, handheld GPS, or cell phone in the pocket was likely to be damaged or lost. We did extensive testing under sail on numerous prototypes and the Duffy seat is the culmination of what really works.
Q: WILL THE DUFFY SEAT FIT MY BOAT? A: Because it can be used so many ways on a boat, the short answer is, yes, it will fit your boat. Some boats with small cockpits can create a challenge for the helmsman. Probably 95% of sailboats over 20' will benefit from a Duffy seat at the helm, and the remaining 5% may simply require the addition of a small, temporary plywood panel bridging the cockpit seats, or similar modification. We believe so greatly in the comfort of our seats that we don't hesitate to recommend a little creative adaptation to fit a restricted cockpit. Anyone who has used a Duffy Seat on a long sail will agree.
Q: DO I HAVE THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF FILLER IN MY SEAT? A: We ship the seats a little bit over-filled to allow for settling over time. Still, your new seat may appear to need additional filler when you receive it. Bear in mind, the seat is not meant to look firm and filled without someone sitting in it. If over-filled, the seat loses its ability to form around the user, and the first thing to suffer is lower back support. You can experiment with varying amounts of filler, but rest assured that we measure carefully when we inititially fill your chair.
Q: WILL THE DARK SUNBRELLA GET HOT IN THE SUN? A: We've found that the seats can be hot to the touch when left in the sun, but they tend to cool rapidly when used. On warm sunny days, throwing a beach towel over the seat will make it immediately comfortable.
